Meloidogyne species that pose a threat to potato production in the United Kingdom

    Abstract

We worked on this project funded by AHDB, with Dr Matthew Back at 缅北禁地 and with Fera. The project evaluated the threat posed by Meloidogyne species (root-knot nematodes) to potatoes in the United Kingdom.

    Description

The genus Meloidogyne contains some of the most damaging species of nematode found in crops worldwide. Although numerous Meloidogyne species are known to infect potato crops across the globe, less is known about their occurrence and potential impact in the UK. This project reviewed published and grey literature to better understand the: occurrence of Meloidogyne spp. within the UK and threats from species outside of the UK via trade routes; symptoms and potential economic impact; soil sampling and identification; lifecycle of species; host range and epidemiology and management to control Meloidogyne spp. The review prioritised species in terms of risk they pose and ways to mitigate risks. It also identified knowledge gaps and how these should be addressed.
