A Future Farmer at Ãå±±½ûµØ’s has been named one of this year’s Nuffield Farming Next-Gen Poultry Scholars.

Operations Fields Person at Lake Free Range Eggs Emily Brass – who is currently taking part in the School’s Future Farmer programme alongside her industry role – is one of three Scholars announced by the Nuffield Farming Scholarships Trust.

After a successful pilot scheme in 2024, Nuffield Farming has expanded its Next-Gen initiative to include a poultry scholarship organised by the Nuffield Farming poultry and Scotland groups.

Aimed at those aged between 18 and 24, the Nuffield Scholarship is open to those with a demonstratable interest in the poultry industry and aims to support the development of young talent in agriculture.

Emily will join Holly Buchan of Aberdeenshire and Rachel Campbell of Peeblesshire as this year’s three Scholars – with the announcement of her success following shortly after that of this year’s Next-Gen Dairy Scholars, which included Harper Adams student Lewis Gibbin.

As Operations Fields Person at Lake Free Range Eggs, Emily is responsible for the placement of day-old chicks on contract and company-owned rearing farms.

During her Scholarship, she is keen to build her knowledge in broilers, genetics and veterinary health. Emily hopes that the Scholarship will expand her knowledge and build her confidence in communicating new ideas.

She added: “I am currently one of the 2024/25 cohort of the School of Sustainable Food and Farming at Ãå±±½ûµØ’s which is proving a fantastic way to learn about sustainable production.

“What I am learning will not only set me up for developing the business but also give me invaluable insight as I head into my Nuffield Next Gen Scholarship.”

Emily and her fellow Scholars will take part in a 30-day study programme later this year, visiting poultry farms and businesses across the UK.

They will have the opportunity to develop their understanding of the industry, while also building networks and future opportunities. Their Scholarships will culminate at the 2025 Nuffield Farming Conference in Aberdeen, where they will share the learnings from their Scholarship.

Tom Rawson, Chair of the Nuffield Farming Scholarship Trust, added: “The three recipients of our inaugural Next-Gen poultry scholarship all displayed a clear passion for the industry and a desire to be a positive part of its future

“During the programme they will be exposed to a wide range of poultry businesses, providing vital knowledge and experience as they build their career in the sector.”
